Keady Goals Sink Port Mór Challenge

September 27, 2020

An Port Mór 0-14 Keady 3-11

An Port Mór’s seniors faced an old nemesis on Sunday afternoon as Keady were the visitors to O’Neill Park. A perfect day for football with the sun splitting the trees, and only a slight breeze, both sides were looking for a win that would take them away from the bottom end of the table.

Keady enjoyed the lion’s share of possession in the first quarter but were unable to register the scores their play deserved. As the water break approached Port Mór came more into the game and an Oisin Campbell point on 15 minutes gave Port Mór an unlikely one-point advantage.

The second quarter was an impressive period for Port Mór with Ryan Gorman coming to the fore, kicking a couple of nice points. At the interval Port Mór led by two points. An Port Mór 0-7 Keady 0-5.

Keady came firing out of the blocks in the second half and registered two quick points, the sides were level for the third time. The visitors made a number of substitutions and it was these fresh legs that were to prove crucial.

A Keady goal on 40 minutes edged the visitors a goal in front, Port Mór responded well with a point from Gary Traynor and one from Ryan Gorman cut the deficit to just one. Keady and their fresh legs in attack were however, causing Port  Mór’s defence to creak.

After the second water break Port Mór regained the lead with a Ryan Gorman free but the visitors responded immediately with a free of their own.

A Keady purple patch was to end the game as a contest, a quick-fire goal and a point meant Port Mór now trailed by four. The home side did manage to create a goal chance but a slip in the Port Mór forward line meant the chance was passed.

On 55 minutes Keady were awarded a penalty and as it hit the back of the net, Port Mór’s task was insurmountable. Port Mór did continue to fight to the final whistle but it was in vain as Keady ran out six point winners.

A disappointing result for An Port Mór, who travel to Wolfe Tones next Sunday in the final game of this stage of the league. The goals were crucial but Port Mór did produce a spirited performance.
